May 17- Video of the Week

By Video of the Week No Comments

In my first installment of “Video of the Week” I chose a video not based on its images, but more on its content.  It seems appropriate to kick off this whole blogging thing with a positive note and see where we go from there.

I recently attended my brother’s graduation from the University of Colorado.  The best thing about graduations are the speeches, most importantly the guest speakers, who are sent from across the world to share their words and motivate the young souls to go out there and take the world on.  Julie Andrews spoke this year and her speech was beautiful, funny and, most importantly to me, praised the arts.  Unfortunately she didn’t sing ‘The Hills Are Alive.’

Since graduating three years ago I have learned a few things and forgotten just as many.  I remember looking out from that podium on the world ready to conquer it.  I thought it would take about two years, but  it’s a little more complicated than I originally thought.

Living in Spain for a year gave me a different view on the American rat race yet I still find myself getting caught up in it all the time.  We as Americans, and myself in specific, struggle to live in the moment.  Whether we are out with our friends, at work or in a traffic jam we always think about the big picture.  What am I doing with my life.  How am I going to get rich.  Etc. Etc.  I for one, want to live more in the moment and more importantly learn to love every moment.

So I give you David Foster Wallace’s graduation speech in 2005 at Kenyon College.  With animation from theglossary.com
